Frequently asked questions

What is dodast?

dodast is a local-first media player. It plays the music and video files you already own, finds their artwork, and keeps playback in sync across the devices in your home — without your library ever touching the cloud. There is no account and no streaming catalogue.

Where can I get it?

dodast is available for Android on Google Play and for iOS on the App Store — the same app, built from one shared codebase.

Does dodast cost anything?

dodast is free to download and use. To keep it that way, the free version is supported by ads (starting from the release that ships them), and an optional premium purchase that removes ads and unlocks extra features follows — buying anything will always be your choice. The privacy policy explains how ads work and the choices you get.

Is my music or my data uploaded anywhere?

No. dodast has no server and no cloud — your files, your library index, and your playlists stay on your device. The internet is used for artwork lookups (which send only tag metadata like artist and album names), for ads in the free version, and for crash and usage diagnostics. During a listening session, audio travels directly between your own devices on your local network, never through the internet. The privacy policy describes all of it, service by service.

How do listening sessions work?

One device hosts a session, and other devices on the same Wi-Fi join it — they find the session automatically, or you can show a QR code for instant joining. The host sends the current track's audio straight to each joined device so every speaker hears the same moment. If the current item is a video, only its audio track is sent — the video itself never leaves the host.

Why can't another device find my session?

A few things to check:

  • Same network — both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Guest or public Wi-Fi — many guest, hotel, and office networks isolate devices from each other, which blocks automatic discovery. Joining by QR code sometimes still works; a home network always will.
  • VPNs — a VPN on either device can block local network traffic. Try turning it off while in a session.
Why is some music, video, or artwork missing?

Missing files: rescans are live and incremental, so new files should appear shortly after they land on your device. If something never shows up, check that the file plays in another app and that dodast has the Music & audio permission (or Photos & videos for the Videos tab).

Missing artwork: art embedded in your files always comes first. For everything else dodast looks the artwork up online, which needs an internet connection — results are cached, and misses are retried on later scans. Some releases simply aren't in the archives yet, in which case embedding the art in the file's tags always works.

Can dodast delete or change my files?

dodast never deletes or moves your music or videos. The only change it can ever make to a file is a tag edit you save yourself — and on Android 10 and newer, each file's edit goes through the system's own consent dialog first.
